Change Process: (self-reported)
South Carolina ranks in the top 10 of women living in poverty. Some of these women are homeless, in abusive relationships, have limited educations and limited employment skills. They do have though the drive to make a better life for themselves and their children. They are sent to Anderson Interfaith Ministries from schools, churches, agencies, businesses and individuals. When we accept a participant into the WACS program we require accountability, self help and educational classes. We provide scholarships and childcare, emergency assistance, help with transportation, and all are given opportunities to change. The goal is to empower committed participants to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and generations to come. We see the changes in our participants almost immediately. The level of their self-esteem increases just by attending our life skills classes and being involved in the community. Through our life skills classes the participants learn new skills such as how to get the most from a bank account, how to keep a budget of their money, how to get along with fellow employees and how to behave in different social settings. Through this program we see great changes in the behavior and lifestyle of our participants and it is all because of an increase in knowledge and new experiences. We also see great changes in the children of our participants. These children become more comfortable in social settings and they are more successful in school and in their relationships with friends, teachers and their parent.
