Change Process: (self-reported)
Shelter residents come with no place to live - sleeping in a car or doubled-up with another family. Their attitudes change as they learn to live within their income, learn that people in the community do care, learn that they are a person of value who must care for themselves and their family. Many of the residents connect with a local church congregation while living at Spring Valley. They develop new friendships with people who will continue to encourage them after leaving the shelter. The residents learn that live can be transformed but they must be responsible. "I moved beyond thinking of myself as a 'loser'" was the way one woman described her experience.
