Outcomes & Measures: (self-reported)
Outcome 1
Provide basic services (nutritional meals, showers, laundry, clothing).
Measure
At each visit, we record the purpose for the client visit (e.g. shower, meal) and track number of clients using the services we offer (e.g. number of individual visits).
Outcome 2
Build relationships with clients including encouragement, counseling, accountability.
Measure
Track daily conversations and attendance at meetings (e.g. each guy that shares one-on-one with staff, attendance at meetings).
Outcome 3
Connect and refer clients to other organizations and programs that offer necessary services.
Measure
Keep a journal of each guest. Staff make entries when referrals are completed (Clients must follow through with referrals or action steps are taken).
Change Process: (self-reported)
Sharing family-styled meals is foundational for the Ministry Center. While sitting around the dinner table, relationships are formed and distinctions between the men and staff are lessened. Guys participate in meal preparation and learn what it means to be interdependent and other-centered. A subtle behavioral shift occurs as they begin to care about those around them. Further change results when guys follow through on goals by creating action plans. When steps are completed, be it attending AA meetings regularly or scheduled appointments with service providers, Emmaus considers it a stage towards a transformed life.
Change seen through Jesse’s story:
Emmaus has been a part of Jesse's life for over a decade. At first, we knew him on the streets as a guy who would dodge outreach workers and avoid any meaningful conversations. It took us years to win Jesse’s trust and build a relationship with him. As we got to know him better, we learned how his father tormented and abused him until he finally fled for the “peace” of the streets at age 16. On the streets he was swept into a world of drugs, sex, and eventually prostitution. He never could imagine more for himself.
After a long journey, Jesse now keeps away from the streets by staying in his apartment, budgeting his social security check to meet his basic needs, and managing his different doctor’s appointments and medications. We’ve walked alongside him by taking him to the doctor, helping him budget and save, and regularly encouraging him.
