Program Mission Statement: (self-reported)

The primary goal of the program is to mentor young people in ministry/community development activities that necessarily utilize aviation technology as part of the transportation process in conducting the ministry.

In 1999-2000 AWA facilitated nearly 3000 volunteers in a hands-on project where 465 youth assisted AWA personnel in rebuilding an aircraft in Berrien Springs, Michigan, for the purpose of sending it to South America to support community development and ministry among tribal peoples of Guyana. About 2,000 youth collected school supplies, toiletry items, clothing, etc., and assembled 2m500 care packages as gifts from school children in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin to the indigenous children of Guyana. Another group of about 20 high school students accompanied AWA personnel to Guyana and spent two weeks assisting with community health education, construction, agriculture, dentistry, and spiritual ministry to three villages in two tribes.

Over the past three summers, youth from Iowa, Missouri, and North and South Dakota have accompanied AWA volunteers on 10 day trips to native villages in Alaska where they have participated in a range of relationship building activities including arts and crafts, construction, community improvement projects, athletics, and games. In June 2004, the youth and adult participants also worked with native children grieving a death in the village and witnesses of a villager who hung himself.

The program mentors both youth and troubled youth from homes in North America to utilize a broad range of skills including aviation technology to build relationships among themselves, their community, and internationally. The international/cross-cultural experience creates an environment that challenges their world view and makes them better citizens of their communities and their planet.
